Another Quarterback Battle In Denver?

Another offseason, another quarterback battle. It was a saga that dragged on all last year, and probably by the end of it all the Broncos fans had had enough. It became obvious Kubiak liked Trevor Siemian, as he showed by keeping him in the game for the full 60 minutes against Oakland. But then Kubiak retired and up stepped Vance Joseph, and with it a new quarterback battle.

The story ever since the end of the season has been about Tony Romo. Will he go to Houston? Will he come to Denver? Neither he decided, and he went to CBS. It seemed both Denver and Houston were unprepared to trade for him, and John Elway had distanced himself from any move for Romo recently. However his decision to retire is much more of a crushing blow for Houston who are left with Tom Savage, whilst the Broncos have two exciting young prospects.

Trevor Siemian did play superbly in patches last season, particularly in the terrific 4-0 start Denver made. But then came the shoulder injury, which brought Broncos Country a taste of Paxton Lynch, but also meant Trevor would not be at his best for the rest of the year. It was tough to watch the offence at times, but none of the Broncos’ fans realised the extent of the injury that Siemian was carrying, which led to him having postseason surgery. You can’t help but root for Trevor, the goofy seventh round pick with that comedic skittles adverts that made all of Broncos Country chuckle in a season that became far from fun. Only time will tell, but you would think a fit and healthy Trevor is the Broncos best option for 2017.

Paxton Lynch arrived amongst great fanfare as a first round pick. It is much too early to label him a bust as some have, particularly in comparison to the first overall pick Jared Goff. He does need to show rapid improvement over the offseason, and should be pushing Trevor close. Against Tampa Bay last season he showed flashes of his talent, but struggled when asked to start in place of Siemian. And the starting job is what he wants, and what he should have. Trevor showed great poise as a second year player, and hopefully with a year to learn the ropes and a full offseason working with our extremely talented receivers he can show great growth and start to fulfil his potential.

The main change to Denver’s quarterback play could well be the offensive line, to which John Elway has made crucial additions through the likes of Ronald Leary and Menelik Watson, and a left tackle is likely to be added through the draft or trade, with Joe Thomas rumours swirling. The return of CJ Anderson will hopefully bring the running game back to being a threat, and that in turn will help the offence with opposing defences having to fight on two fronts.

A veteran QB could also be added for the preseason, but the starter will most definitely be between seventh round pick Trevor Siemian and first round pick Paxton Lynch. And I’m rooting for Trevor Siemian.
